Citation
For his discoveries in laser physics and quantum optics, atomic and statistical physics, and biological engineering.

Marlan O. Scully earned a B.S. in engineering physics from the University of Wyoming and M.S. and Ph.D. (1965) degrees in physics from Yale University. For over thirty-five years, Dr. Scully played a pioneering role in many important areas of quantum optics and laser physics research, quantum computation, teleportation and the slowing down of the speed of light.

Dr. Scully joined the Texas A and M faculty as professor of physics in 1992. He was named director of Texas A and M's Center for Theoretical Physics in 1995 and has served as co-director of the Texas Laser Laboratory at the Houston Advanced Research Center in The Woodlands.

In addition to the Elliot Cresson Medal from The Franklin Institute, he has also been awarded the Adolph E. Lomb Medal of the Optical Society of America and the EG and G Medal of the Society for Optical and Quantum Electronics. He has received Sloan and Guggenheim Fellowships and a Humboldt Distinguished Senior Faculty Award. Dr. Scully is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the Optical Society of America, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the Max Planck Society.
