When Benjamin Franklin arrived in France in December 1776, he was wearing a fur hat to keep his head warm. The French elite that welcomed him were especially enamored of Franklin’s look, which to them was the embodiment of the “rugged American frontiersman” image they so admired. In fact, the popularity of his image led Franklin to order a large supply of fur hats from America that he wore everywhere during his time in Paris.
