William A. Nierenberg served as director of Scripps Institution of Oceanography and vice chancellor of marine sciences at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) from 1965 to 1986.

Mr. Nierenberg was known for his work in low-energy nuclear physics, and was a leading expert in several fields of underwater research and warfare. He had a long record of national and international service, beginning with his participation as a young, scientific section leader on the Manhattan Project from 1942 to 1945. He also served as Assistant Secretary General for Scientific Affairs at NATO from 1960 to 1962, as well as on a multitude of national governmental advisory boards over the course of his career.

He was a member of the National Academy of Science, the National Academy of Engineering, and the American Philosophical Society. Mr. Nierenberg died in 2000 at the age of 81.
