Citation
For health strategies on obesity and chronic disease.

Dr. Kumanyika is the recipient of the Bolton L. Corson Medal for the development of effective health strategies that have changed conventional thinking about obesity, diet, and chronic disease. Using rigorous scientific methodology, Professor Kumanyika found that while the affluent in America have adopted healthier high fiber, low fat diets, poorer people have resisted changing their eating patterns, equating high-fat food with success. She has shown the need for public health programs that reach this high-risk population.

Shiriki Kumanyika received a Ph.D. in human nutrition from Cornell University, a M.S. in public health from Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health and a M.S. in social work from Columbia University. Prior to joining the University of Illinois in 1996, she had been affiliated with the Pennsylvania State University Center for Biostatics and Epidemiology at the College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
