Ready to go, the pilot—Mr. Marshall Earl Reid—steers the Flyer out, away from the crowd and the photographer, to an open area of the airfield where it appears that the Flyer accelerates along a straight path. It does not appear that the Flyer achieves liftoff during this segment, but its speed and forward motion is obvious.
