Human Genetic Variation Activity

  1. Set up several stations for students to measure their heights (cm.).

  2. Using the Class Height Graph overhead instruct students to record their heights.

  3. Have students record their sex chromosomes (XX or XY), number of noses, and hair color.

  4. Compare the graphs. Students will see two distinct bars for determination of sex and they should obtain a bell curve for height and hair color.

  5. Discuss other traits that will show a graph similar to sex determination (cystic fibrosis, sickle cell, Huntington's). These traits are determined by two alleles.

  6. Explain that traits such as height, weight, and skin color show similar graphs. These traits show a variation of traits and are determined by many genes.

  7. Additional background information on Understanding Human Genetic Variation.
