activity: Create Your Own Water Cycle

What you will need:

  • a mug
  • some hot water, straight from the kettle
  • a metal spoon

What you will do:

  1. Fill the mug with freshly boiled water.
  2. Hold the metal spoon above the liquid.

What do you observe?

  1. Have a look at the spoon. What is forming on the back of the spoon?
  2. What is the process called that is making water leave the mug?
  3. What is it called when steam (a gas) changes back into liquid water?
  4. What do we call it when liquid water is deposited, or falls back into the mug?
  5. Draw a diagram of the mug and spoon. Draw arrows to show how the water is moving to the spoon and back into the mug. Label your arrows to show the 3 processes that are happening. Now you've drawn your own water cycle!!
