Create Your Own Water Cycle

  • a mug
  • some hot water, straight from the kettle
  • a metal spoon

Hard Water

  • 3 clean transparent jars
  • rain water
  • tap water
  • detergent
  • teaspoon or spatula

Investigating Temporary and Permanent Hard Water

  • 6 boiling tubes and bungs
  • 5 beakers
  • distilled water or rain water
  • tap water
  • solid calcium hydrogencarbonate
  • solid calcium sulphate
  • detergent (soap solution) in a dropping bottle (or with a pipett)
  • spatula
  • glass stirring rod
  • test tube clips
  • test tube wrack
  • safety glasses

Science Investigation

  • distilled water
  • local tap water
  • local tap water that has been boilied
  • sea water
  • mineral water (you could try several different brands)
  • distilled water with a little sodium chloride dissolved in it
  • distilled water with a little calcium chloride dissolved in it
  • dropping pipette
  • soap solution
  • test tubes and holders
  • bunsen, heat mat

pH Testing

  • 5 samples of water - tap water, distilled water and 3 other sources (this could be tap water from a different area, pond water, river water, sea water)
  • narrow range pH paper
  • several clean, dry test tubes
  • test tube rack, or large beaker to hold the test tubes in

Water Purity

  • 5 samples of water - tap water, distilled water and 3 other sources (this could be tap water from a different area, pond water, river water, sea water)
  • accuate thermometer
  • several clean, dry boiling tubes
  • clamp stand and boss
  • test tube rack, or large beaker to hold the boiling tubes in
  • safety glasses

Water Clarity

  • 5 samples of water - tap water, distilled water and 3 other sources (this could be tap water from a different area, pond water, river water, sea water)
  • filter funnel and paper
  • several clean, dry beakers

Unusual Water

  • polythene strip
  • dry soft cloth, like a duster
